Dear Lykkers! Join us as we recount our unforgettable journey, highlighting key attractions, delicious local cuisine, and a cozy lakeside hotel.

Majestic Lake Hawea: Nature’s Masterpiece

Our adventure began with the mesmerizing views of Lake Hawea. The drive along Hawea-Wanaka Road was a feast for the eyes, offering panoramic vistas of the lake’s pristine waters framed by rugged mountains. We took frequent breaks at scenic viewpoints to soak in the beauty and capture photos of the stunning landscapes.
One of the highlights was hiking the Lake Hawea Track, a 7.4 km trail that provides panoramic views of the lake and surrounding peaks. This trail is open year-round, but visiting between October and April offers the most pleasant weather. There’s no entrance fee, making it an ideal option for those looking to enjoy nature without any additional costs.

Nearby Attractions: Exploring the Best of the Region

A short drive from Lake Hawea brought us to the charming town of Wanaka, which has its own share of attractions. The Wanaka Tree, a solitary tree standing in the lake’s shallows, is a picturesque spot perfect for photos, especially during sunrise or sunset.
We also explored the Rippon Vineyard, known for its stunning scenery. The vineyard’s beautiful views and informative tours were a highlight. A tour of the vineyard is available for around NZD 20 per person, offering insight into the region’s spectacular vineyard views.
For the adventurous, we ventured to the nearby Rob Roy Glacier. The 6 km return track offers breathtaking views of the glacier and surrounding waterfalls. This hike is best undertaken in the warmer months, and while there’s no fee for the trail, guided tours are available for those seeking expert guidance.

Cozy Lakeside Stay: The Lake Hawea Hotel

Our stay at the Lake Hawea Hotel added a touch of luxury to our trip. Located just a short walk from the lake’s edge, the hotel offers comfortable rooms with stunning lake and mountain views. Rates start at NZD 250 per night, with options for suites and deluxe rooms available. The hotel’s restaurant provides a range of delicious meals, including locally inspired dishes made with fresh, seasonal ingredients.

Savory Delights: Local Food Experiences

Our culinary adventures at Lake Hawea were filled with delightful flavors. We began our mornings at The Lakeview Eatery, a local café known for its welcoming atmosphere. We enjoyed a hearty breakfast of eggs benedict and freshly brewed coffee for around NZD 20 per person.
For lunch, we headed to the Hawea Hotel’s restaurant, where we sampled a flavorful dish of roasted seasonal vegetables with quinoa, priced at NZD 30. This satisfying meal was perfect after a day of exploration.
Another tasty find was the Lake Hawea Pie Shop. Known for its delicious and filling pies, we tried a variety of options, including mushroom and spinach pies, priced at approximately NZD 8 each. These savory pies made for a perfect snack or light meal during our adventures.
