A supermoon occurs when the Moon is situated near its perigee. If the Moon coincides with the full moon phase during perigee, it is termed a super full moon.
The varying distance between the Moon and Earth during its orbit contributes to the supermoon phenomenon, as the Moon at perigee appears closer and exhibits a larger surface area than during a regular full moon.
In simple terms, when the Moon is in proximity to Earth, observers witness a larger surface area, whereas a more distant Moon results in a smaller apparent surface. Maintaining a significant distance prevents blurring due to the lens's focal length, ensuring both the moon and foreground remain sharply defined. Optimal distances often exceed one kilometer.
Understanding basic astronomy proves invaluable for capturing the perfect supermoon shot. Familiarity with the moon's orbit aids in choosing the right location for an awe-inspiring image.
Additional tips include setting a small aperture to enhance depth of field, bringing out lunar details. Adjusting the exposure value (EV) downward, usually by 1 or 2, helps optimize the shot. Experimenting with different apertures and EV values, reviewing results promptly, and fine-tuning settings contribute to a successful shoot.

However, caution is advised as higher zoom levels increase the risk of blurriness due to hand shaking. Therefore, a tripod is indispensable for achieving sharp and captivating moon shots.
