Bridges are structures built over rivers or any other obstacles to support walkways, roads, railways, etc.
The basic function of a bridge is to cross:
1. Natural structures like rivers.
2. Man-made structures like roads, bridges, etc., transform flat intersections into vertical ones.
3. To save space and land.
There are various types of bridges worldwide, each unique and diverse. Here are ten of the most unique bridges in the world:
1. Glacier Skywalk, Canada
The Glacier Skywalk is a remarkable feature in Jasper National Park, the largest high mountain national park in Canada. Just a five-minute walk from the Columbia Icefield Discovery Center, this suspended bridge above the Sunwapta Valley allows visitors to walk on a glass platform, offering picturesque views of the glaciers.
2. Langkawi Sky Bridge, Malaysia
This curved pedestrian suspension bridge, at an altitude of 2300 feet (700 meters) above sea level, spans 410 feet (125 meters) in Malaysia.
3. Garden Bridge, UK
Set to be built across the River Thames in London, the Garden Bridge plans to incorporate trees and gardens. The proposed length is 1204 feet (367 meters) and the width reaches 98 feet (30 meters).
4. Gateshead Millennium Bridge, UK
This inclined bridge, exclusive for pedestrians and cyclists, stands as the world's first and only tilting bridge. Crossing the Tyne River, it links Gateshead's south bank to Newcastle's north bank. This arched bridge rotates using hydraulic systems to allow the passage of boats.
5. Undulating Bridge (Changsha Meixi Lake Bridge), China
This bridge, an engineering marvel, attracts attention for its unique architectural style. The Mobius strip-styled pedestrian bridge spans the Longwanggang River, covering 490 feet (150 meters) with a height of 79 feet (24 meters), providing different routes on various levels across Changsha, China.
6. Helix Bridge, Singapore
Linking Marina Center and Marina South in Singapore's Marina Bay area, this pedestrian bridge sits adjacent to the Benjamin Sheares Bridge and runs alongside the vehicular Bayfront Bridge.
7. Falkirk Wheel, UK
Functioning as an elevator for boats, this rotating wheel bridge connects the Forth and Clyde canals and the Union Canal. Lifting vessels to 79 feet (24 meters), it's the world's only rotating boat lift. The wheel has a diameter of 115 feet (35 meters).
8. Henderson Waves, Singapore
This 899-foot (274-meter) pedestrian bridge stands 118 feet (36 meters) above Henderson Road, making it the tallest pedestrian bridge in Singapore. Connecting Mount Faber Park and Telok Blangah Hill Park, its design comprises seven undulating steel ribs forming a wave-like structure.
9. Doha Sharq Crossing Bridge, Qatar
Construction began in 2015 for this 12-kilometer-long fluid-design bridge series, including three bridges connected by tunnels underwater in Qatar. This multi-billion-dollar project also integrates vibrant entertainment facilities.
10. London Rolling Bridge, UK
This foldable bridge is part of the Paddington Basin retail development by the Grand Union Canal office. It consists of eight sections interconnected to form a rolling bridge.
Bridges serve as sacred records, witnessing human history in their diverse forms, and documenting humanity's challenging journey of adaptation to nature and remarkable achievements.
They embody practical technology, serving as palaces of human wisdom, encapsulating human intellect and exquisite craftsmanship. Grand-span bridges stand as monumental works in the bridge domain, showcasing the tireless efforts of builders, representing a nation's progress in science and technology and comprehensive national strength.
